No matter where we go or what we’re doing, it seems that the word ‘green’ gets brought up in our conversations. From green cleaning to green lighting and even green transportation, green has become the color representing sustainability. Green collar jobs are literally the jobs of the future.

How Are Green Collar Jobs Defined Today?

There’s no longer a single government source that tags a job “green.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics ran a green jobs measurement program starting in 2010, but budget cuts eliminated it in 2013, along with its output-based and process-based definitions. In practice, that means green employment today gets tracked the way every other skilled trade does: under each occupation’s own code. Solar photovoltaic installers, wind turbine technicians, electricians, and HVAC/R technicians all have their own entries in the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, and all four show up among the fastest-growing jobs in the country.

Weatherization Still Drives Demand

One steady source of demand for green collar work is weatherization, the process of modifying a building to cut energy use and improve efficiency. The Department of Energy’s Weatherization Assistance Program has run since 1976 and now weatherizes about 32,000 low-income homes a year, saving those households an average of $372 or more annually. Congress kept the program funded for fiscal year 2026, and states can also direct a share of federal home energy assistance dollars toward weatherization work. That funding supports ongoing work for HVAC technicians, insulation installers, and electricians who retrofit older buildings for better efficiency.

What Industries Nurture Green Collar Jobs?

Metal fabrication is one of the industries most affected by the buildout of clean energy infrastructure. Solar arrays, wind turbines, and natural gas pipelines all require structural metalwork, which keeps welders and pipefitters in demand. The median annual wage for welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers was $51,000 in May 2024, and while overall employment growth in the trade is modest, the BLS still projects about 45,600 openings a year as the current workforce retires.

HVAC is another field shaped by green construction. As government institutions and private building owners pursue energy-efficiency retrofits, HVAC/R professionals are needed to convert older buildings into ones that use less energy, and new-construction contractors increasingly want crews with training in high-efficiency heating and cooling systems. The median annual wage for heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers was $59,810 in May 2024, with employment projected to grow 8% through 2034 and about 40,100 openings a year.

Solar and Wind Are Setting the Pace

If any two jobs define the green economy right now, they’re solar photovoltaic installer and wind turbine technician. The BLS’s own 2024–2034 projections name these as the two fastest-growing occupations in the entire U.S. economy, tied to nothing else in healthcare, tech, or any other sector. Wind turbine technicians are projected to grow 50%, with a median wage of $62,580, and solar photovoltaic installers are projected to grow 42%, with a median wage of $51,860.

Solar installation in particular has become one of the more accessible entry points into the trades. Technicians typically enter through on-the-job training with a solar installer, a technical or trade school program covering electrical fundamentals and photovoltaic systems, or a formal apprenticeship, and many states require specific licenses or certifications to work on residential and commercial systems. Demand isn’t evenly spread either: installers report the strongest job availability in states with high solar adoption, including California and much of the Northeast, though openings continue to grow nationwide as utility-scale solar expands.

What Is the Outlook for These Green Collar Jobs?

Skilled workers in metal fabrication carry skills that transfer across a wide range of industries, and the ongoing buildout of solar farms, wind installations, and gas pipelines is pulling welders in from less stable manufacturing sectors. HVAC has a similarly strong outlook: entry typically requires only a postsecondary certificate or a completed apprenticeship, not a four-year degree, and technicians can move up quickly with additional certifications in high-efficiency and green building systems.

Solar and wind now sit at the top of that list. Both trades offer wages above the U.S. median for all occupations, growth rates several times faster than the economy-wide average, and a direct connection to the infrastructure the country is building right now, from utility-scale solar farms to offshore wind and the electrical grid upgrades that support them.
