EV Battery Plants Are Quietly Hiring a Lot of Welders

Key Takeaways

  • Battery plants across the U.S. are hiring in 2026, with thousands more positions planned as new lines come online.
  • Contractors hire during construction and retooling, and plant maintenance teams hire once production runs.
  • Plants shifting from EV batteries to energy storage still need welders, because every conversion requires new foundations, supports, and piping.
  • Structural and pipe weld qualifications transfer between battery plants, data centers, and chip fabs, which widens the market for trained welders.

The U.S. had12 battery gigafactories operating and 23 more under construction as of early 2026, even after roughly 10 projects worth more than $10 billion were canceled or stalled. The plants that survived are hiring production workers and bringing in construction crews this year, and both groups include welders.

Most coverage of electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing focuses on assembly lines and battery chemistry. Behind those lines sit steel frames, pipe racks, and production equipment that welders build, modify, and repair.

Where Battery Plant Jobs Are Opening

Hiring at a battery plant follows its production schedule. Each new line needs operators, technicians, and maintenance staff, and each new wing needs a construction crew before any of them arrive. Plants in Kansas, North Carolina, and Kentucky sit at different points in that cycle this year:

Plant Location Status Workforce
Panasonic Energy De Soto, Kansas Two lines running, two more starting, second wing under construction with two of its four lines due in 2027 About 1,400 employees in February 2026, at least 300 more needed for the fourth line, 4,000 projected at full capacity, with a February 2026 hiring event for entry-level skilled machine technicians
Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina Liberty, North Carolina Four lines making hybrid cells, 14 lines planned More than 1,200 hired, about 5,000 planned
Ford (former BlueOval SK site) Glendale, Kentucky Retooling from EV cells to energy storage cells, modules, and 20-foot DC container systems, targeting 20 GWh a year by late 2027 About 2,100 jobs planned after roughly 1,500 layoffs

And while those are the plant productions currently in progress, it’s also a strong indicator for more potential battery plants being developed across the country.

Phased plants keep construction crews on site well after production starts. When a factory runs one wing while building the next, welding demand stretches across several years instead of one build cycle.

That timing matters for anyone weighing a move into this work. A plant announcement is the start of the hiring, not the end of it.

What Gigafactory Jobs Look Like for Welders

Gigafactory jobs for welders rarely involve the battery cells themselves. Automated laser and ultrasonic equipment joins cell tabs and busbars inside the plant. Hand welding concentrates in the building, the process systems, and the equipment that keeps production lines running.

The employer changes with each phase of a plant’s life, and the welding work changes with it:

Retooling Contractors and plant engineering teams Line modifications, equipment supports, guarding Fit-up, fabrication, MIG and TIG on mixed metals
Operations Plant maintenance departments Fixture, conveyor, and guard repair, robot tooling upkeep Multi-process welding, mechanical troubleshooting, safety compliance

Construction and Retooling Work

Battery plants stand on large structural steel frames, and someone has to erect and weld every connection. Contractors reportdifficulty finding iron workers at 78% of firms in 2025, up from 69% in 2024. Structural welding sits squarely inside that gap.

Process piping runs through every battery plant, carrying water, compressed air, and processed chemicals between production areas, so many of the same job postings ask for both pipe welding and pipefitting. That combination is what theWelding and Pipefitting program is built around.

Maintenance Welding Once the Lines Run

Once production starts, hiring shifts toward plant maintenance. Entry-level technician roles like the ones Panasonic recruited for in De Soto are built for people with hands-on training rather than years of plant experience.

Maintenance welders repair fixtures, rebuild guarding, fabricate brackets, and fix conveyors. The job pairs welding with mechanical troubleshooting, so welders who can read equipment drawings and diagnose a problem before they strike an arc move into these roles faster. The plant’s automated welding cells also need people to set them up, repair their tooling, and inspect the welds they produce.

Maintenance roles also bring steadier schedules than construction. A plant runs around the clock once its lines are full, and the maintenance department stays on site after the construction crews move to the next project. Welders who want to put down roots near one employer often aim for this side of the work.

Why Battery Plant Hiring Continues as EV Sales Cool

Federal EV purchase creditsended September 30, 2025, and sales dropped after the deadline. Several plants, Ford’s Kentucky site among them, responded by shifting lines toward storage batteries for utilities and data centers, where demand held up.

Some plants were designed for that kind of shift. Toyota built its Liberty plant so its mix of cells can change as buyers move between hybrids, plug-ins, and fully electric vehicles, which protects the jobs inside the plant when the market moves.

When a plant does convert, the changeover creates welding work of its own. A conversion like Ford’s Kentucky retool means new equipment foundations, supports, and piping, the same welding and fitting work a new build requires, so a slowdown in one product line can mean a busy year for the contractors changing it over.

The demand for trained hands also shows up outside the plants. Suppliers that make battery components, enclosures, and equipment tend to cluster near a new factory, and each of those shops needs fabricators and maintenance welders of its own.

Positioning Yourself for Battery Plant Jobs

Welders see about45,600 openings a year nationally, most from retirements and job changes. Battery plants add to that steady baseline rather than replacing it, which gives welders options if a single project slows.

Preparing for electric vehicle jobs, and the construction and maintenance work around them, starts with these steps:

  • Pass the weld test. Industrial sites hire on performance. Structural and pipe qualifications carry weight at battery plants, and they transfer to data centers and semiconductor fabs.
  • Train for the phase you want.Professional Welding Training builds structural and fabrication skills, and the pipefitting track adds the process piping these plants depend on.
  • Look past the plant’s own careers page. Industrial contractors on announced projects post construction roles, plant maintenance departments post operations roles, and state workforce job boards list both.
  • Plan for travel during construction. Build and retooling phases often send crews to a site for months, then move them to the next project.

Battery plants will keep building, converting, and maintaining their lines whether the next product is an EV cell or a grid battery, and each of those phases calls for welders with structural, pipe, or maintenance skills.
