There are a couple of routes that a person can take in order to become a plumber. One such way is to take part in an apprenticeship program, while another common route involves going to a trade school. No matter the path that a person chooses to follow to become a plumbing professional, he or she will ultimately have to become licensed in order to be hired to work on other’s plumbing systems and carry out his or her professional services. Once licensed, plumbers can work for different types of companies including both residential and commercial businesses. Some plumbers even choose to be self-employed and start their own practices.

Plumbing Apprentice

Before a person can become a plumbing apprentice, he or she will need to be at least 16 years of age, and have high school credits in math and English. In addition, it is helpful for the person to be physically fit. Once all educational and age requirements have been met, it is wise to contact a local college to help locate a local plumber’s trade union. Apprenticeships for any technical trade are conducted through the field’s respective union.

Trade School Technical Program

Tulsa Welding School’s Pipefitting program offers comprehensive training that covers blueprint reading, mathematics, safety, piping codes/specifications, and other plumbing skills. Students learn about different types of pipes, pipe systems installation, plumbing related fixtures and more. While you learn about the subjects involved in plumbing, you will also be drilled in the application of that knowledge. Common courses taken in Tulsa Welding School’s Pipefitting program include tubing materials, blueprint reading, welding, and applied mathematics.

Students interested in plumbing will be required to take and pass written examinations. In order to pass the tests, students will need to become familiar with the state’s plumbing code. In addition, students will need to have basic plumbing knowledge, understand plumbing safety codes, and how to perform installation, repair, and maintenance tasks. The purpose behind being able to pass these examinations is to ensure a plumber will have the necessary knowledge it takes to carry out plumbing services in a safe and effective manner.
