TWS is a Great Training Option for Everyone

Learn more about how we can prepare you to advance your career.

The job market is shifting. Employers are looking for technicians who bring more than one skill to the table. For those in skilled trades, cross-training in HVAC and welding is becoming a practical path to wider job prospects and long-term career flexibility. At Tulsa Welding School (TWS), students can explore programs that allow them to build a strong foundation in both areas.

Why Cross-Training Matters in Skilled Trades

HVAC/R and welding might seem like separate trades, but they share more in common than you might think. Both require technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and a hands-on skillset. Cross-training builds your understanding of how systems work together on job sites. In construction, manufacturing, and maintenance, multi-skilled workers are often more valuable to employers who want to streamline operations.

For example, someone trained in HVAC might be called on to modify metal ductwork or piping. With welding experience, that technician can handle the full task without bringing in a second specialist, saving time and increasing job site efficiency. The ability to take on multiple tasks can also open the door to supervisory roles faster.

HVAC/Welding Career Paths With a Broader Skill Set

Students who understand both HVAC/R systems and welding techniques may qualify for a wider range of jobs. These could include:

  • HVAC installer with metal fabrication skills
  • Commercial refrigeration technician with piping experience
  • Maintenance technician in industrial facilities
  • Field service technician for large mechanical systems
  • Pipefitting roles that require both thermal system knowledge and welding certification

Some employers prefer or even require cross-disciplinary experience for certain positions. For example, power plants, factories, and refineries often have complex mechanical systems where HVAC, refrigeration, and welding overlap. Having both skill sets allows you to work in these environments more effectively.

Program Focus: HVAC/R & Welding Training at TWS

Tulsa Welding School offers training programs in both HVAC/R and welding, giving students the opportunity to build diverse technical skills in separate but complementary areas.

The Refrigeration Technologies program is designed for those pursuing a career in HVAC/R. It covers refrigeration fundamentals, residential and commercial HVAC systems, and electrical controls through hands-on training in simulated real-world environments. The program can be completed in as little as seven months and is offered at all TWS campuses:

  • Tulsa, Oklahoma
  • Jacksonville, Florida
  • Houston, Texas
  • Dallas Metro, Texas

The welding program at TWS includes training in structural welding, pipe welding, and specialty processes. These programs prepare students to work in construction, manufacturing, and maintenance settings where metal fabrication and joining are required.

Students can choose to pursue HVAC/R or welding first, then consider cross-training to expand their qualifications and job opportunities. To explore these potential opportunities, reach out directly to our admissions team to discuss what your ideal path may be.

New: Industrial Maintenance

Learn About Our New Advanced Industrial Maintenance Program

Tulsa Welding School is proud to announce our newest program offering available at our Houston & Dallas Metro Campuses – Advanced Industrial Maintenance Technology! Learn the skills you need to take on the industries of manufacturing, distribution, energy production and facility maintenance in as few as 7 months.

Combining Welding Skills With HVAC Training

Students who have already trained in welding or are considering doing so may find that adding HVAC to their skill set makes them more competitive in the job market. Welding programs at TWS include instruction in structural, pipe, and specialty welding methods. When paired with HVAC training, this combination prepares students to handle a range of technical challenges.

For example, HVAC technicians often need to cut, join, or modify metal components. With welding training, these tasks become more efficient and accurate. This added skill can also improve safety and durability in installations, especially in high-pressure systems.

A Smart Move for Long-Term Career Flexibility

Cross-training can help you find your initial career footing while supporting long-term career growth. Multi-skilled technicians may qualify for more promotions, be first in line for special assignments, or find more consistent work across different sectors. Employers appreciate team members who can step into multiple roles when needed.

At Tulsa Welding School, our goal is to provide students with the tools to succeed in real-world environments. Whether you start with welding, HVAC/R, or both, diversifying your skill set can help you stand out in a competitive job market.
