TWS is a Great Training Option for Everyone

Learn more about how we can prepare you to advance your career.

Are you interested in becoming an HVAC or electrical technician? We find that applicants will sometimes confuse HVAC/Electrical with Advanced Industrial Maintenance Technology (AIMT) and reach out for the first two only to enroll for AIMT. Regardless of which trade program you are looking to attend, Tulsa Welding School (TWS) can help you decide which one fits your career goals.

Choosing a Career: HVAC vs Electrical vs Industrial Maintenance

Choosing between HVAC, Electrical, and Advanced Industrial Maintenance Technology (AIMT) depends on what you are passionate about and where you want to work.

HVAC: Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning

If you like fixing air conditioners, heaters, or other climate control systems, HVAC might be a strong fit. HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning—the systems that help people stay comfortable indoors year-round. These systems are found everywhere, from homes and office buildings to hospitals and factories. They regulate temperature, improve air quality, and maintain safe indoor environments. Some setups are simple, like window units, while others are complex systems that heat, cool, and ventilate entire buildings.

HVAC technicians install, repair, and maintain equipment like furnaces, boilers, air conditioning units, and heat pumps. They also work with refrigerants, which means they need special training and certification. At TWS, students preparing for HVAC careers receive help getting their Section 608 certification, which is required for anyone handling refrigerants. The program also teaches system diagnostics, air flow testing, and safety procedures—giving you the technical skills you’ll use on the job.

Electrical: Wiring, Power, and Problem Solving

If you’re interested in powering buildings, installing lighting systems, or repairing electrical equipment, a career as an electrician could be a good match. Electricians make sure that homes, offices, schools, and factories have safe and reliable electrical systems. Their work involves reading blueprints, running wires, installing outlets, and troubleshooting problems. Every project requires focus, accuracy, and a good understanding of how electrical systems work.

There are different paths within the electrical trade. Residential electricians handle wiring in homes and apartments. Commercial electricians work on larger systems in offices, stores, and schools. Industrial electricians focus on maintaining and repairing equipment in factories and energy plants. Students in the electrical program at TWS learn how to wire buildings, interpret electrical diagrams, and follow national codes. The training is hands-on, which helps prepare students for the real demands of job sites.

AIMT: Advanced Industrial Maintenance Technology

AIMT blends mechanical, electrical, and automation skills to keep machines running smoothly in industrial settings. These systems power large factories, manufacturing plants, and warehouses. If you’re interested in working with robots, conveyors, motors, pumps, and computerized controls, AIMT might be the right direction for you.

Technicians in this field handle both routine maintenance and emergency repairs. They inspect equipment, replace worn parts, and keep systems running without interruption. AIMT professionals also learn to work with programmable logic controllers (PLCs), which are used to control automation in modern facilities. At TWS, the AIMT program covers a wide range of topics—electrical wiring, mechanical repair, system diagnostics, and safety protocols—giving students the foundation to work in high-tech environments where machines are at the heart of production.

Which Career is Best for You?

Choose HVAC if you like hands-on work and enjoy solving problems. HVAC technicians fix air conditioners, heaters, and refrigerators because every home and office needs heating and cooling. If you like traveling to different job sites, working both indoors and outdoors, and enjoy fixing things people use every day, HVAC could be a great career path for you.

Choose Electrical if you are interested in how buildings get their power. Electricians wire homes, install lights, fix power problems, and work on big projects like schools and factories. If you like math, working with your hands, and solving puzzles, electrical might be the right career path.

Choose AIMT if you want a career that combines mechanical, electrical, and automation skills. AIMT technicians keep machines, robots, and production systems working. If you like the idea of fixing conveyor belts, engines, and automated systems, consider the AIMT program at TWS.
